It was originally developed in the early 1970s under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Defense's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Many of the most commonly used networking protocols, including TCP/IP, were developed as part of the ARPAnet project. The ARPAnet was decommissioned in 1991, but parts of the network have become part of the Internet.
